Hippodrome Casino in London Looks Set To Expand

The Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square, London, could be set to expand following the purchase of a neighbouring arcade.

Crystal Rooms Adult Gaming Centre was sold to the Hippodrome Casino by Praesepe for an undisclosed sum following a shift in business strategy by its former owners. The group owns 71 adult gaming centres throughout Greater London, but has been growing its presence in coastal areas. It appears the company is now focussing on this area of its business.

"We believe the energy and overall resource required to remain at the top of the game in central London can be deployed more effectively throughout what is a growing business employing some 1,600 staff nationally," explained Praesepe CEO Nick Harding.

Situated in the heart of central London's hospitality and leisure district, the Hippodrome Casino has grown into one of the busiest casinos in the United Kingdom and has become a popular live entertainment venue. Under the guidance of CEO Simon Thomas, the Hippodrome continues to flourish and the purchase of the Crystal Rooms Adult Gaming Centre looks set to see the Hippodrome Casino progress to new heights.

"This is a significant new opportunity for the Hippodrome business," said Thomas. "It not only allows us to extend the current gaming offer but delivers a significant platform at street level to showcase the magnificent range of entertainment facilities within the building. We have ambitious new plans for the space in the months ahead, so watch this space."

Although Thomas has refused to reveal what his "ambitious new plans" for the company's new premises are, one school of thought is that it could be renovated and turned into a new poker room. The Hippodrome Casino is the home to PokerStars LIVE and hosts regular United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) series events. Back in 2013, the venue hosted also the European Poker Tour (EPT) London festival.

While the current poker room inside The Hippodrome Casino is a beautiful place to play poker, it somewhat lacks in available floor space and capacity when compared to some of the venues the UKIPT and EPT visit. Expanding its poker room seems like the next logical step for the partnership with PokerStars and would allow it to host major poker festivals throughout the year.

ANZPT7 Melbourne Day 3: Open the floodgates

We've reached that point.

The bubble burst with the final hand of last night's action and now it's time for the shortstacks to get it in and gamble.

The 63 remaining players have all guaranteed themselves a $3,200 return and will be chasing that $261,200 top prize when the champion is crowned tomorrow. The plan today is to play down to our final seven and we're expecting to arrive at some point in the next eight levels. There are a few shortstacks in the mix after play slowed down before the bubble last night so we could be in for an action-packed start here for Day 3.

Crown-Poker-Room.jpeg

That bubble would burst last night as the new chip leader emerged. Kenn Langcake sent Minh Nguyen to the rail in 64th place with aces over kings to snatch the top spot in the dying stages. Langcake now sits with 440,500 in chips as play begins.

Rumour has it this is Langcake's first live event with no live cashes to his name, but he has seen significant success on the virtual felt. Locking up a Main Event cash here it's a great start to his live poker career and he's found himself in prime position to make a deep run.

Current chip leader Kenn Langcake

Joining Langcake as the frontrunners include Mario Doria with 422,000, Samuel Higgs on 416,500 and Day 1B end-of-day chip leader Hyeong Wook Choi with 401,500.

Also still in the race are ANZPT Sydney reigning champion Jim Psaros (277,500), Australian Poker Hall of Famer Leo Boxell's son Danny (88,000) and Aussie Millions Main Event winner Manny Stavropoulos (186,000). Trailing the field as play begins is Rory Young with 32,500 in chips.

There is only 16 minutes left of Level 15 as the action recommences. Blinds continue at 2,000/4,000 with a 500 ante and the average stacks sits at 165,000. We'll see 63 become just seven tonight as we edge closer to our last-ever ANZPT Main Event final table.

We hope you can join us here at the PokerStars Blog for all the stories from Crown Melbourne and be sure to check in with the team at PokerNews for all your live reporting needs!

Politics and Zealotry Loom Ahead for Internet Casino Bill

Despite the enthusiasm expressed for the introduction of Barney Frank's Internet casino bill, such unprincipled speakers as Spencer Bachus are eager to spread lies about online gambling to defeat the bill.

Nobody in the Internet casino industry is surprised the familiar foes of regulated online gambling are marshaling their forces to resist the passage of Barney Frank's new bill. While some celebrated prematurely, in what iMEGA chairman Joe Brennan, Jr., called a display of "completely unqualified enthusiasm," others knew the hardest parts are ahead.

Once again, Spencer Bachus is quick to utter absurdities into whatever microphones come near him, apparently figuring it doesn't have to be the truth if you say it often enough.

“Illegal offshore Internet gambling sites are a criminal enterprise," says Bachus in a tautology. He neglects to note if they are legalized, they will, of course, not be criminal enterprises.

Bachus also states that "...allowing them (online casinos) to operate unfettered in the United States would present a clear danger to our youth, who are subject to becoming addicted to gambling at an early age.”

Gaming experts note that Bachus' claims of addiction belie most modern evidence, but his rhetoric reflects strongly-held convictions of the social conservatives that form his base.

"In certain circles, what Bachus parrots is considered to be proved beyond question, without ever an objective consideration," says sociologist Gerald Holdenstein.

When told that concerns about problem gambling and child participation would be addressed by modern developments in software, Bachus told the New York Times that "such security measures are inherently unreliable, can be trivially circumvented and will fail at high rates.”

Online gambling operators point to success with such programs in the United Kingdom, but also realize Bachus may not believe his own words, and certainly will not disavow them, as he plays a cynical political game.

"At least he's no longer telling everyone one-third of US teenagers who gamble attempt suicide anymore," said one casino owner, speaking of a disproved wild claim Bachus made to rally troops against Frank's last gaming bill.

Huge weekend of action capped off with TheManM's $126k MicroMillions win

The weekend has been a busy one for poker players around the world. The MicroMillions 6 completed its 11-day online festival while both LAPT Uruguay and ANZPT Auckland were crowning new champs, including bad boy Carter Gill who won LAPT Uruguay for $218,692.

The MicroMillions 6 pulled in an incredible 1,420,306 entrants and paid out $8,823,501 in prizes proving once again the voracious appetite that low-stakes players have to play for the big bucks. The MicroMillions Main Event racked up 65,397 players alone, each entering for $22 (or less if they satellited in), and paid out a staggering $126,000 to Brazilian winner TheManM. A huge congratulations also goes out to quixote123 who won the MicroMillions Leader Board to claim the Player of the Series title and half-a-year's worth of Sunday Million tickets!

Successfully grinding live tournaments were Carter Gill, who won his first major title, while David Lim was over in Auckland busy celebrating his ANZPT win for NZ$110,760. And let's not forget all the regular Sunday night action, the results of which can be found here. The big winners were vizquel17 from Israel ($213,214.40). Bluf_To_Much from Moldova ($156,879.91) and DeLaBijen from the Netherlands ($113,712), who took the top three Sunday Million spots, which you can read about here. Other big timers were Sunday Warm-Up champ SlevinRO from Romania ($105,536.21) and Sunday 500 champ OLD TIME GIN from Canada ($52,629.30). OLD TIME GIN is a tough regular and has previously won the Super Tuesday.
