It may be the simplest strategy in daily fantasy, but it’s also one of the most effective.
Chase the minutes.
Coming into the week, six of the Top 10 players in minutes played per game average 21 points per game or better. The other four - Detroit’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Marcus Morris, Phoenix’s Brandon Knight and Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton - are all reasonably priced for the production they provide and are nightly bargain plays due to their heavy workloads.
This is where you should look for the best value plays on a given night. Caldwell-Pope is the perfect example of a player who won’t erupt for 60 fantasy points in a game, but is just as unlikely to hurt your roster. KCP does enough in points, assists, rebounds and steals to be a worthwhile cash-game option every time he starts - and he won’t break the bank, allowing you to roster more expensive players.
You can’t field a roster of NBA superstars, so when it comes to filling in the gaps, look for the guys who see the most court time. This is especially effective in cash games, where floor supersedes ceiling.
Here are the week’s top FanDuel must-roster options:
Tuesday - SF Kevin Durant, Thunder (at Nuggets)
It’s a constant toss-up between Durant and PG Russell Westbrook when it comes to deciding which Thunder superstar to roster on a given night. Give Tuesday’s edge to Durant, who averages a tidy 29.9 points in 29 career encounters with the Nuggets - his third-highest scoring average against any team. He had 26 points and 10 assists in their first meeting earlier this season.
Wednesday - SF LeBron James, Cavaliers (at Nets)
King James will no doubt be steaming after Cleveland dropped a 34-point decision earlier this week to the visiting Golden State Nuggets. LeBron was held to pedestrian numbers (16 points, five rebounds, five assists) in limited minutes, and will look to bounce back in a big way against a Brooklyn team that has Joe Johnson to defend him, but little else. Look for James to go off in this one.
Thursday - PG Reggie Jackson, Pistons (at Pelicans)
Jackson ranks a step below the elite options at point guard, but he’s in great position to return major value Thursday night against a New Orleans team that has struggled to prevent points all season long. Jackson has seen his assist totals rise every month this season - a testament to Detroit’s improving offensive versatility - and with few defensive threats on the Pelicans roster, Jackson should roll.
Friday - PG Kyle Lowry, Raptors (vs. Heat)
Lowry has been red-hot so far this month, averaging 22.6 points, 7.5 assists and 6.1 rebounds over eight January games. Miami boasts one of the league’s slowest paces - and one of its most impressive defenses - but its backcourt is banged up and has no way of slowing Lowry down. This game may be a low-scoring affair, but Lowry is too good not to reach value.
Saturday - PG Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers (vs. Lakers)
This matchup couldn’t be any sweeter for Lillard, who gets to face a Lakers team he has already punished this season. Lillard is averaging 29.5 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a pair of meetings with Los Angeles, and is guaranteed to see a healthy block of minutes against an overwhelmed Lakers backcourt. Don’t overthink game flow here, and roster Lillard in all formats.
Sunday - PG Russell Westbrook, Thunder (at Nets)
This one doesn’t require much explanation: Westbrook torches opposing point guards on a nightly basis, and with just three games on the schedule, daily fantasy players shouldn’t take any chances. The possibility of a blowout certainly exists, but no player in the league can do more damage in limited minutes than Westbrook. A triple-double is in play here, even if he sees only 25-30 minutes.
