The $5,000 buy-in Card Player Poker Tour Venetian main event drew a field of 537 players, making a total prize pool of $2,497,050. After six days of action, it was longtime tournament grinder Jon Turner who came away win the win, together with the biggest score of his career for $536,858.
Turner topped the most important event at the schedule for the Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza III, a sequence boasting greater than $16 million in guarantees this summer.
The 34-year-old North Carolina-native is among the top online poker players in history, earning greater than $7.7 million playing under the name PearlJammer. He now has greater than $2.56 million in live earnings, meaning he has crossed the $10 million mark in total poker earnings.
In order to secure the victory, Turner needed to overcome a difficult final table that included Artem Metalidi (2nd), Dan Heimiller (3rd), Jeremy Ausmus (6th), Erick Lindgren (8th) and Tim Reilly (9th). Other notables who made the cash included Ben Palmer (53rd), Kathy Liebert (52nd), Tom Kearney (49th), Jason Wheeler (48th), Joe Elpayaa (47th), Lily Kiletto (43rd), Jeff Madsen (40th), Joey Weissman (39th), Eddy Sabat (36th), Hiren Patel (34th), Chris Oliver (25th), Chance Kornuth (22nd), Adrian Mateos Diaz (14th) and Dan Sindelar (12th).
With a generous structure that at one point saw the general four players each working with a standard of 83 big blinds, the tournament may have lasted well into the early morning, but Turner began to draw back from the pack and put pressure at the shorter stacks.
After busting Heimiller in third place by rivering the nut flush, Turner took a 4-1 chip lead into heads-up play. It wasn’t long before Turner stretched that lead out much more and Metalidi was right down to about 15 big blinds. On his final hand, Metalidi moved in with pocket queens and Turner needed help with A9
