Buddhist Monk Gets 30 Months In Prison For Gambling Away $263,000 From TempleNO Deposit bonus $43

A Buddhist monk from Louisiana who was ordered earlier this year to face trial for gambling away greater than $200,000 in temple funds have been sentenced to prison.

According to a report from Nola.com, Khang Nguyen Le was sentenced Monday to 30 months behind bars. He had pleaded guilty to wire fraud after some initial confusion over his plea deal.

The 36-year-old Le also needs to pay full restitution, the judge said, along with facing possible deportation to Vietnam upon being released from prison.

Le’s game was blackjack at L’Auberge Casino in Lake Charles, and he would spend as much as $10,000 a session. The gambling came about between January 2013 and August 2014. The report said that Le would attempt to gamble in parts of the casino where it was less likely he could be seen.

Prior to the scandal, Le have been president, presiding monk and resident of the temple of the Vietnamese Buddhist Association of Southwest Louisiana.
