Sands ECO360, the worldwide corporate sustainability program of Las Vegas Sands, under the Sands Cares corporate citizenship initiative, has released its 2015 report. The report is a mirrored image of a five-year journey detailing the company's aspiring global sustainability strategy, which serves as its roadmap for continuous improvement of environmental stewardship at its properties around the globe. The multi-faceted strategy has ended in LVS achieving significant "green" milestones that experience earned quite a few sustainability designations and awards by key industry authorities.
To achieve its ambitious five-year goals set in 2011, LVS built its sustainability strategy around four key pillars to succeed in the best environmental impact, including Green Buildings, Environmentally Responsible Operations, Green Meetings and Stakeholder Engagement. Through this holistic approach, LVS met its targets within the following areas:
- LVS exceeded its carbon footprint target, with an 8.1 percent reduction from the 2010 baseline for existing properties and a 19.6 percent reduction from the 2012 baseline for newly opened properties.
- LVS improved its waste diversion rate by 11.5 percent and 12.2 percent over baseline at existing buildings and newly opened properties respectively. Greater than 24,000 lots of materials were diverted/recycled, which represents 30 percent of the company's waste.
- LVS reduced electricity consumption over baseline by 16.8 percent in existing properties and 11.8 percent in newly opened properties.
Aggressive water conservation projects have led to a 2.6 percent reduction in water consumption within the last year. With continued focus on this area, LVS expects this trend to continue within the future.
"Leading the worldwide sustainability efforts of the organization affords me with the original opportunity of seeing first-hand the tremendous efforts our team members make every day to cut back our impact at the environment," said Katarina Tesarova, vice chairman of world sustainability for LVS. "Developing and implementing a comprehensive sustainability strategy eager about leaving a responsible, cleaner, and safer world for future generations is amazingly rewarding."
LVS was in a position to extend its expertise and learnings to its meeting and convention clients through its industry-leading green meetings program. The Sands ECO360 Meetings program, established in 2011, supports forward-thinking clients in making their events more sustainable, offering environmentally preferable options to meeting planners and clients.
LVS was recognized within the 2015 CDP's Climate A-List and Climate Disclosure Leadership Index for management and measurement of greenhouse emissions, and was also listed within the 2015 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for its industry-leading corporate sustainability efforts in North America.
