This week's must-have NBA daily fantasy basketball players
There are few developments more irritating in daily fantasy than putting together the ultimate lineup, only to be beaten by players whose fantasy lineups are full of guys who went to overtime.

That extra five minutes of play (or 10, in the case of double-OT) may not result in a lot of real-life scoring, but it can make all the difference in the daily fantasy world. Just ask anyone who has seen his or her lead evaporate with what seems like a meaningless rebound in the final minute of OT.

Predicting which games will go to overtime is a futile exercise. Entering Tuesday, just 44 games have gone past regulation so far this season - roughly 3.5 per week on average.

The best approach: target players in games where the spread is five points or fewer. Of the games to go to overtime this season, roughly 60 percent fall into that spread category.

Here are the week’s top FanDuel must-roster options:

Tuesday - PG Russell Westbrook, Thunder (at Knicks)

Sometimes it’s best to fade Westbrook, who often carries one of the highest daily fantasy salaries on the schedule. Tuesday isn’t one of those times, however, as Westbrook finds himself in prime position to return value in a game with a sky-high total. Westbrook’s 26.1 scoring average in 12 games versus New York is his highest against any team.

Wednesday - PG Stephen Curry, Warriors (vs. Mavericks)

Too many DFS players will shy away from superstars in mismatches, fearing those players won’t see enough minutes to reach value. It’s probably best not to lump Curry in with those other guys, since he can rip a team to shreds in far less than 35 minutes per game - just ask the San Antonio Spurs. Curry should dominate the overmatched Mavericks backcourt.

Thursday - C DeMarcus Cousins, Kings (at Pelicans)

You’ve no doubt been following Cousins’ emergence as the premier big man in daily fantasy and this matchup should bring out the very best in him. Either he’ll go toe-to-toe with New Orleans superstar Anthony Davis, who is at less than full health, or Davis will sit, and Cousins will lay waste to whomever has the unenviable task of guarding him.

Friday - SF Carmelo Anthony, Knicks (vs. Suns)

Picking on Phoenix has become de rigeur in the daily fantasy world, but as long as the Suns founder near the bottom of the standings, they’ll find themselves targeted. Anthony is still struggling to find his groove this season, but with a depressed price and a top-flight matchup against a team that hemorrhages points, Carmelo is a fine pick Friday.

Saturday - SG James Harden, Rockets (vs. Wizards)

As tempting as it may be to pick any of the Warriors’ stars against lowly Philadelphia, Harden has a much better prognosis in his home date with Washington. The Wizards are one of the most banged-up teams in the league, and Harden sees a ton of minutes in just about every game-flow situation. He should have little trouble racking up the stats.

Sunday - C Karl-Anthony Towns, Timberwolves (at Trail Blazers)

Towns has been the most impressive rookie in the league to date, and should take advantage of a Portland team that will struggle to contain him. Add in the fact that this should be a close, high-scoring affair, and Towns makes for a tremendous value pick at a tier below the league’s top big-man daily fantasy options.
