Daniel Negreanu documentary "Kid Poker" premiers tonight on TSN4
^

Last week was a "big day" for perhaps the biggest name in world poker. This time though it wasn't events at the table that caused a stir, but those off it.

Daniel Negreanu is a name recognised beyond the poker room, something that may well have been behind the creators of a new documentary examining the life of poker's most iconic players.

Kid Poker, a documentary produced by Francine Watson and PokerStars, tells that story; from Negreanu's upbringing in the card rooms and pool halls of his native Toronto, to the present day, where Negreanu stands as perhaps the most successful poker player to have ever graced the game.

He does tend to grace it. Personable, entertaining, and supremely gifted, he is the ambassador poker needed, and got, whether it's his performance at the table - most recently his 11th place finish in the WSOP Main Event - or his frequent media appearances.

For those at the premier last Thursday at the TIFF Bell Lightbox theatre in Downtown Toronto, it was a celebration of Negreanu's story. It also permitted a glimpse behind the man, examining his friendships, such as that with fellow pro Jen Harman, and his family, specifically his brother Mike Negreanu, who playing a key role in the film, revealed a strong, and loving support system that has sustained Negreanu throughout his career.

And what a career. Negreanu is a six-time WSOP bracelet winner, as well as the games highest money winner. Contributions from top professional players, including fellow Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, and European Poker Tour creator John Duthie, spoke of Negreanu's abilities as a player that has enabled him to thrive at every stage of a career that has brought him success for more than two decades.

The reaction of those who attended, including Comedian Gerry Dee, gave some hints as to the reaction of those attending the red carpet event. .

Now Kid Poker is something fans and poker players can see for themselves when the broadcast premier of Kid Poker takes place this evening at 8.30pm ET on the Canadian Channel TSN4. It's a treat for our Canadian friends, while the rest of us wait for its general release later in 2016.

But it's a story worth waiting for.
