The All-Star break is nearly upon us, and for daily fantasy enthusiasts, that means seven days of exploring other hobbies (unless you're a fantasy hockey player, in which case, enjoy the week!)
But the lengthy break provides daily fantasy players with a chance to evaluate how they've performed to date - and what changes, if any, they need to make heading into the second half.
Here are some questions you should ask yourself as you transition from the first half to the second half:
- Have I been more successful in tournaments or in cash games?
- Do I fare better on short slates or larger schedules?
- Am I playing the proper stakes? Should they be higher or lower?
- Is there a particular game format in which I excel or struggle?
- How can I be even more effective at tracking my results?
In the meantime, we still have three days’ worth of games this week. Here are the top must-play options prior to the break:
Tuesday - PG John Wall, Wizards (at Knicks)
The Knicks are in turmoil, having lost nine of their last 10 games and firing head coach Derek Fisher. Regardless of how the team responds, Tuesday represents a great matchup for Wall, who should have little trouble victimizing New York's overmatched backcourt. Ignore Wall's high price tag and roster him confidently.
Tuesday (Bonus Pick) - PG Isaiah Thomas, Celtics (at Bucks)
Wall is the top PG on the slate, but Thomas isn't far behind. The electrifying guard averages a robust 22.6 points in 27 road games, and is well-positioned to tee off against a Bucks team allowing nearly 103 points per game. Thomas can contribute in a number of categories, and will cost less than Wall.
Wednesday - PG Stephen Curry, Warriors (at Suns)
The Warriors will go into the break on pace to break the Chicago Bulls' NBA-record 72 victories and it's a good bet that Curry will be looking to end the first half on a high note. The Suns are allowing 106.4 points per game - the second-highest mark in the league - and have no hope of containing Curry, who should thrive even in limited time.
Wednesday (Bonus Pick) - SG James Harden, Rockets (at Trail Blazers)
Neither the Rockets nor the Trail Blazers are pillars of defense, making this game a good bet to wind up the most high-scoring affair of the night. That will only help Harden, who is one of the best stat-stuffing guards in the NBA. He'll carry one of the biggest FanDuel salaries on a loaded schedule, but he should be worth every penny.
Thursday - SF Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks (vs. Wizards)
The "Greek Freak" has come into his own, coming into the week with averages of 15.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and a steal in nearly 35 minutes per night. He's a consistent source of daily fantasy points even when his shot isn't falling, and comes at a reasonable price. On a schedule short on options, go with Antetokounmpo's reliability.
Thursday (Bonus Play) - PG Russell Westbrook, Thunder (vs. Pelicans)
With just two games on the final night prior to the break, options are few. And like Antetokounmpo, Westbrook is as close to a no-brainer as it gets. You'll need to get creative in other areas to afford Westbrook, and he'll likely be so widely owned that you'll essentially be cancelling out your point guard spot. But you have to have him. Enough said.
